Jeffrey Talbot knocked on the door and waited. He stared at the metal numerals stuck to the wood, noticing that one of the screws was missing in the numeral 2. Inside, he heard a faint rustling. He knocked again. “Just a minute,” the voice came, muffled, low. He straightened his tie, putting the heavy valise on the floor near the door. Briefly, he went over the pitch in his mind. He looked at the name written on the slip of paper he held in his hand: O’Connor. He smiled and put the slip of paper back into his jacket pocket. Why didn’t she hurry? Or he? Or whoever was rustling around inside? Patience, Mr. Matthews had said. A little patience goes a long way. Just remember that these people want what you have to offer. It’s your job to give it to them. Be patient. But make the sale. . . .
