Критики отмечали повышенную эмоциональность его стиля и мастерство описания странных чужих ландшафтов. Читатели буквально завалили писателя письмами. Роман «Здравствуй, лето… и прощай» был признан лучшим британским романом семидесятых годов и переведён на 26 языков. Коуни нравилось жить на тропическом острове, но местные политики стали чинить всё больше и больше препятствий белому населению Антильских островов. Возвращаться в Англию Коуни не хотелось, и в 1972 году семейство писателя перебралось в Канаду, рассудив, что там и для них, и для детей будет больше возможностей устроить свою жизнь. Так они оказались в Британской Колумбии, в городе Сиднее. Это маленький городок на острове Ванкувер, на пути от Виктории, столицы Британской Колумбии, к полуострову Саанич. Коуни нашёл работу в службе лесной охраны и проработал в ней до самого выхода на пенсию в 1989 году. Переезд в Канаду также стал окончанием лучшего периода в творчестве Коуни. Его роман «Бронтомех!», который в 1976 году был награждён премией Британской ассоциации научной фантастики, стал последним значительным произведением того периода. Впоследствии Коуни подшучивал: «Роман наградили премией только потому, что в жюри конкурса был мой агент». Его следующие книги, два романа для подростков «Последние джунгли» и «Котёл Нептуна», а также цикл «Песня Земли» о плавании к звёздам на парусных лодках и паровозах уже не производили прежнего впечатления. Chapter 1
I often think of that day in Alika when my father, my mother and myself hurried to and fro, assembling a pile of possessions on the front porch in preparation for our holiday in Pallahaxi. Although I had barely reached puberty, I had learned enough of the ways of adults to keep out of the way during this annual event which always constituted, for some reason, a panic situation. My mother scuttled around with quick movements and vacant eyes, constantly asking the whereabouts of vital items then answering her own questions. My father, tall and dignified stalked up and down the cellar steps with cans of distil for his prize possession, the self-propelled motorcart. Whenever my parents caught sight of me, there was no love in their eyes. So I kept out of their way, while nevertheless making sure that my own possessions were not forgotten. I had already secreted in the pile my slingball, my Circlets board, my model grume-skimmer and my fishing net, unassembled. During a furtive visit to the motorcart I slipped my cage of pet drivets behind the back seat. At that moment father emerged from the house with yet another can in his hand, scowling. “If you want to make yourself useful, you might fill the tank.” He set the can beside the cart and handed me a brass funnel. “Don’t spill it. It’s valuable stuff, these days.” He was referring to the shortage resulting from the war. It seemed to me that he hardly ever referred to anything else. As he strode back into the house I unscrewed the cap, sniffing at the heady aroma of distil. The stuff had always fascinated me; it seemed incredible to my juvenile mind that a liquid, particularly a liquid bearing a close resemblance to water, should be capable of burning. Once, at the suggestion of a friend, I had tried drinking it. The basis of distil, this friend had told me, is similar to that of beer and wine and all those other exciting, forbidden drinks served at inns. . . .
I didn't remember any individuals that morning; just a sea of drinking faces between myself and closing time. I know I was busy, and usually when the inn is crowded, time goes quickly. But that morning dragged. My God. how it dragged. I do remember a certain amount of good-natured banter and leg-pulling, as the regular customers realized that my mind was not on my job, and I served them scotch when they asked for beer, and when they pointed out the error I still couldn’t get it right... At last it was 1500 and I had signified time, and they were drifting out. I closed the door behind the final laggard and pottered around the room, aimlessly picking up glasses and putting them down again ... I turned on the water, filled the sink, dropped in a few dirty glasses and swirled them around absently. I couldn’t stand it any longer. I left the glasses to drain, opened the door and went outside, my stomach a knot of anticipation. I crossed the lane and walked over the short, springy salt grass to the cliff top. I turned, and gazed inland. Across the fields, far away, a wraith of dust rose into the still air, moving slowly, too slowly. As I watched it my thoughts were suddenly carried back by a vivid process of deja vu, and it was once again that hot summer’s day, three years ago ... . . .
