Описание: Деймон Фрэнсис Найт (Damon Francis Knight, 19 сентября 1922 г. - 15 апреля 2002 г.) - американский писатель-фантаст, знаменитый редактор и критик НФ. Первая публикация Деймона — рассказ «Tiger Ride», он был написан совместно с Джеймсом Блишем, обоим ещё не было и 20-ти лет (1941). В 1943 году Найт начинает профессионально работать в журналах компании Popular Publishing, а в 50-м становится редактором журнала «Worlds Beyond». В первой половине 50-х гг. из-под пера Найта выходит целый ряд прекрасных рассказов, посвященных проблемам развития человечества, контактам с внеземными цивилизациями: «Забота о человеке» (1950, премия Ретро-Хьюго-1951); «А прошлым не живи», «Юнга» (1951); «Аналоги», «Билет куда угодно», «Прибрежный бродяга» (1952); «Вавилон II» (1953, о возможности лингвистики при контакте с инопланетянами), «Двое лишних» (1953, об инопланетном организме-симбиоте); «Rule Golden», «Анахрон», «Роды с сюрпризом» (1954), «Страна милостивых» (1955), в котором общество наказывает преступников «психологическим» одиночеством. В 1955 году Деймон публикует свой первый НФ-роман «Hell's Pavement» (выросший из рассказа «Аналоги»). Помимо плодотворной писательской деятельности, Найт обращается к литературной критике. В 1956 году он был удостоен премии «Хьюго» за сборник критических статей «In Search of Wonder», который заложил методологические и художественные принципы жанровой критики. В том же 1956 г. вместе с Дж.Блишем и Дж. Меррил Д.Найт основал Конференцию Авторов НФ, и более 20 лет проводил с сподвижниками знаменитые писательские семинары, (сначала Милфордские, затем ежегодные Клэрионовские семинары). Деймон Найт не выпускает из рук перо, радуя читателей новыми рассказами. Появляются «Назад, о время!» и «Наобум» (1956); «Наказание для Джорджи» и «Человек в кувшине» (1957); «Палка для идиота», «Творение прекрасного», «Будь моим гостем», «Враг», «Рипмав», «Ночь обмана» (1958), «Кукловод», «Времени хватит на всё» (1960) «Аутодафе», (1961), «Большой бум» (1963, саркастический ракурс предпринимательства и потребительства), «Красотка на заказ» (1964); «Тяга к непорочности» (1966), «Восславит ли прах тебя?» (1967, моральная ответственность Бога за гибель человечества в ядерной войне), «Маски» (1968, психологические проблемы киборга). Выходят романы «Творец людей» (1959), в котором «дубликатор материи» создает копии людей; в романе «Mind Switch» (1965) человеческий мозг пересажен в тело инопланетянина. В 1965 году Деймон Найт основал Ассоциацию американских писателей-фантастов (он был первым президентом SFWA в 1965-1967 гг.) и премию «Небьюла». Ныне Ассоциация SFWA объединяет свыше 1200 самых известных и одаренных писателей, художников, редакторов со всего света. С 1966 по 1980 год он был антологистом 21-го выпуска знаменитой серии «Orbit», в которой впервые громко прозвучали имена Джина Вулфа, Р.А.Лафферти, Кейт Вильгельм (Уилхелм), Гарднера Дозуа и других писателей. Серия антологий, считавшаяся «эталонной», познакомила читателей с вершинами англоязычной НФ. Найт продолжает писать, выходят его романы «The Man in the Tree” (1984), «CV” (1985); продолжение — «The Observers” (1988), «A Reasonable World” (1991). За свою деятельность в 1975 г. When Emily Woodruff first saw Sea Venture on a blue November day, her heart jumped, and she said, “It’s so big'.” Her husband Jim, who misunderstood her or perhaps understood her in a different way, said reverently, “Nothing but the best.” as if he were talking about a new car or a motor home. But none of the brochures had prepared her for this: Sea Venture was incredibly, impossibly big, looming there beyond the heads of the people like some fantastic cloud castle against the sky. The white wall curved up and back; above it were other curves, and beyond them she could see pennants snapping in the sun, and a tall white cylinder, with gulls soaring over it. Jim was sixty-five, a pink-faced man with white hair brushed smoothly back against his skull. They had been married thirty-five years, good years, on the whole. Their children were grown, and they had grandchildren. Last August Jim had sold his dealerships for a sum that took Emily’s breath away, and he said, “Let’s have a real vacation. Let’s run over to Honolulu for a couple of weeks and then take a cruise on Sea Venture.” Now, looking at the height she had to ascend, she said, “Jim, I don’t think I can go up there.” “Yes, you by God can,” he said in his other voice. Then two white-uniformed young women, one more beautiful than the other, were helping them onto the moving ramp, and up they went into the sky, like children on a Ferris wheel. When they reached the top, two other young women ushered them into a carpeted lobby, perfumed, echoing with voices. They got into a line that ended at a desk where a uniformed man took their tickets and turned them over to another man. brown-skinned and white-jacketed, who smiled and said, “Please follow me, Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff.” They went down a softly lit blue corridor to an elevator that bore them up smoothly, and paused, and sighed into stillness. Then, down another blue corridor that led them to a paneled door; the brown man opened it, bowed them in, and handed Jim the keys. “Welcome to Sea Venture,” he said. “Your luggage will be up shortly. I hope you will have a very pleasant voyage.” Emily turned slowly. The room was smaller somehow than the pictures had led her to expect. The walls were papered in a blue-and-cream floral pattern; the carpet was royal blue. There were twin beds with quilted covers, and a window through which she could see the boarding area and the brown-hazed skyline of Waikiki beyond it. At the far end of the room there was a desk with a computer terminal and a wall screen. . . .
CHAPTER 1
Well, Mr. Stone, what seems to be your problem?" "I think I was kidnapped from nineteen thirty-one and brought here, and I think the aliens sent me back to put the whole human race in a box." "And why do you think that?" "Because I'm crazy. " The psychiatrist blinked and looked more closely at the detainee. He appeared to be a man in his late twenties or early thirties, clean-shaven, with a round cheerful face. He was wearing a brown suit and necktie, and carried a fedora. The psychiatrist and the detainee were sitting on opposite sides of a chipped gray acrylic conference table with a mandala of coffee rings on it. The panels overhead were humming and buzzing in an irritating lack of rhythm. "Mr. Stone, can you tell me what year it is?" "Twenty ought two." "And who's the President?" "Tennafly." The psychiatrist scribed a note. "So, then, you believe you're here because you're crazy?" "Don't you?" The psychiatrist blinked again. "Let's go back a little. When did you first realize that you had been kidnapped by aliens?" "When I woke up on their spaceship." "And when was that?" "April fifteenth, nineteen thirty-one. Or the next morning, maybe. That would be the sixteenth." "What happened then?" "They hypnotized me and told me to come back and put everybody in a box." "I see. And so you came back?" "Well, they brought me back. I got in trouble in the hotel because I wasn't registered, and I didn't have any ID, the kind you use now. All I had on me was some money with old dates on it, and an expired driver's license. The cops took the money. " . . .
