Другая особенность творчества Альетт — это фон её историй. Она целенаправленно работает с культурным материалом, не укладывающимся в рамки того, что в западных источниках называют «псевдоевропейской фэнтезиландией». Так, действие трилогии «Obsidian and Blood» («Обсидиан и кровь») разворачивается в XV веке в фэнтезийной Мезоамерике, в Ацтекской империи, где главный герой, жрец одного из богов ацтекского пантеона, расследует несколько убийств. Другой крупный цикл писательницы, «Сюйя», который принёс писательнице наибольшую известность, возник из предположения, что Северная и Южная Америка была вначале открыта не европейскими, а китайскими мореплавателями и, соответственно, Китайская империя стала доминирующей на Земле. Альтернативная история постепенно перерастает в космическую фантастику с конфуцианскими галактическими империями вьетнамского и китайского происхождения, в которых учёные управляют планетами, а разумные космические корабли передаются по наследству. Кроме рассказа «Погружение» наиболее известными произведениями цикла можно назвать рассказ «The Waiting Stars» (Ждущие Звёзды), получивший Небьюлу и повесть «The Tea Master and the Detective» (Чайный мастер и детектив), получившую Небьюлу и Британскую премию фэнтези. Неевропейский фон, активное использование сюжетов и образов из классической китайской и вьетнамской литературы — осознанный выбор Альетт, достаточно необычный для англоязычной фантастики. Как говорит сама писательница: «Я не говорю, что псевдоевропейская фантастика плоха… но, думаю, нам стоит стремиться к большему разнообразию, как в плане жанровой принадлежности, так и сеттинга… меня всегда ужасало, как мало переводной литературы печатают в США и Великобритании». И хотя сама Альетт никогда не употребляет термин «постколониализм», совершенно очевидно, что она знакома с идеями этой популярной постмодернистской теории (сущность которой превосходно описывает определение Лила Ганди: «постколониализм — интеллектуальное сопротивление одному из главных последствий колонизации — мифологизирующему забвению прошлого»), они ей близки, и порой она обращается к ним в своих произведениях. Так одной из отправных точек для создания первого романа из цикла «Obsidian and Blood» стало несогласие с восприятием Ацтекской империи только как цивилизации кровожадных злодеев. В настоящее время живёт в Париже, Франция.

The new client sat in the chair reserved for customers, levelly gazing at The Shadow’s Child—hands apart, legs crossed under the jade-green fabric of her tunic. The tunic itself had been high-quality once, displaying elegant, coordinated patterns, but it was patched, and the patterns were five years old at least, the stuff that got laughed at even in a provincial backwater such as the Scattered Pearls belt. Her skin was dark, her nose aquiline. When she spoke, her accent was flawlessly Inner Habitats. “My name is Long Chau. You have a good reputation as a brewer of serenity. I want to use your services.” The Shadow’s Child stifled a bitter laugh. Whatever her reputation was, it hadn’t translated into customers fighting to see her. “Go ahead.” That gaze again from Long Chau. The Shadow’s Child was used to respect or fear; to downcast eyes; to awkwardness, even, with people who weren’t used to dealing with a shipmind, especially one that wasn’t involved in passenger service. The Shadow’s Child’s body—the metal hull that encased her heartroom and her core—was far away from the office compartment they were both in. The avatar she projected into the habitat wasn’t much different from it: a large, sweeping mass of metal and optics that took up most of the office, shifting between different angles on the hull and ports, giving people a glimpse of what she was really like—vast enough to transport merchant crews and supplies, the whole of her hanging in the cool vacuum of space outside the orbitals of the Scattered Pearls belt, with bots crowding her hulls and sensors constantly bombarded by particles. She could have made herself small and unthreatening. She could have hovered over people’s shoulders like a pet or a children’s toy, as was the fashion amongst the older shipminds. But she’d lived through a war, an uprising and a famine, and she was done with diminishing herself to spare the feelings of others. ...
They’re coming. It’s early morning, the end of the Bi-Hour of the Cat—and Thanh has been awake for most of it, staring at the wall and trying to cobble together thoughts in the emptiness of her mind. If she closes her eyes, she’ll see Yosolis again, smell the snow and ashes on the night the palace burned—when everyone was too busy evacuating the real princesses to give much thought to the dark-skinned one in the attic room, the “guest” from the South who had been little more than a glorified hostage. Thanh was sixteen then; she’s eight years older now. It should mean eight years wiser, but instead she feels as hollow and as empty as she was at twelve, watching the shores of Ephteria loom into view for the first time, and thinking that alien and cold court would be her life, that the palace in the capital of Yosolis would be the gilded bars of her jail—and, worse, that Mother was the one who had made the choice for her, for the good of Bình Hải, her home country. For her own good. . . .
