Описание: Фредерик Форсайт (Frederick Forsyth, р. 25 августа 1938) — английский писатель, всемирно известный мастер политического детектива. Агент Британской разведывательной службы МИ-6 на протяжении более 20 лет. В 1956-1958 служил в королевских ВВС, где был одним из самых молодых пилотов. Потом, с 1961 года, работал репортером и сотрудником британского информационного агентства Рейтер, а с 1965 года репортером Би-Би-Си. Корреспондент в Берлине, Париже, Праге. В 1968 году был обвинен в предвзятом освещении событий в Биафре (Африка), в связи с чем ушел из Би-Би-Си и вернулся в Биафру в качестве «независимого корреспондента». Год спустя написал книгу «The Biafra Story», в которой отстаивает свою правоту и опровергает выдвинутые против него обвинения. А еще через два года свет увидело первое художественное произведение Форсайта – роман «День Шакала». И сразу пришла слава! Книга попала в списки бестселлеров, автор получил за нее премию имени Эдгара По, а фильм, снятый по ней, побывал в лидерах проката в десятке стран. Этот-то роман и определил стиль произведений Форсайта на долгие годы. Автор мало углубляется в психологические нюансы поведения героя, зато сообщает массу интересной и полезной информации о политических процессах в обществе (в том числе и скрытых от глаз обычного читателя). Обычно в своих романах Форсайт рассказывает каким образом разведки, гангстеры, политики и дипломаты, воротилы большого бизнеса и торговцы оружием осуществляют свою закулисную деятельность. Причем никогда автор не прибегает к голословным утверждениям, а основывается на скрупулезном изучении той или иной проблемы. Известен такой курьезный факт: в романе «День Шакала» Форсайт описал как международный наемный убийца выстраивает для себя легенду прикрытия и привел способ получения им подлинного Британского паспорта. И только после выхода книги в свет правительство спохватилось и бросилось «перекрывать канал утечки». А по сообщению некоторых таблоидов боевики ИРА успели получить несколько документов прикрытия, пока «источник не иссяк» Репортерское прошлое Форсайта явно дает о себе знать: любит он помещать своих героев пусть и в вымышленные обстоятельства, но зато в реальную обстановку. Добавьте к этому захватывающий сюжет, напряженную интригу, часто неожиданную концовку, безупречный язык (причем стиль автора очень своеобразен и легко узнаваем) и вы поймете почему Фредерик Форсайт вот уже почти 50 лет числится в первых рядах авторов англоязычной детективной литературы.

IT IS COLD at six-forty in the morning of a March day in Paris, and seems even colder when a man is about to be executed by firing squad. At that hour on March 11th, 1963, in the main courtyard of the Fort d’lvry, a French Air Force colonel stood before a stake driven into the chilly gravel as his hands were bound behind the post, and stared with slowly diminishing disbelief at the squad of soldiers facing him twenty metres away. A foot scuffed the grit, a tiny release from tension, as the blindfold was wrapped around the eyes of Lieutenant-Colonel Jean-Marie Bastien-Thiry, blotting out the light for the last time. The mumbling of the priest was a helpless counterpoint to the crackling of twenty rifle bolts as the soldiers charged and cocked their carbines. Beyond the walls a Berliet truck blared for a passage as some smaller vehicle crossed its path towards the centre of the city; the sound died away, masking the ‘Take your aim’ order from the officer in charge of the squad. The crash of rifle fire, when it came, caused no ripple on the surface of the waking city, other than to send a flutter of pigeons skywards for a few moments. The single ‘whack’ seconds later of the coup-de-grace was lost in the rising din of traffic from beyond the walls. The death of the officer, leader of a gang of Secret Army Organisation killers who had sought to shoot the President of France, was to have been an end—an end to further attempts on the President’s life. By a quirk of fate it marked a beginning, and to explain why it must first be necessary to explain why a riddled body came to hang from its ropes in the courtyard of the military prison outside Paris on that March morning . . .

In the dark and secret heart of Washington, there is a short and very covert list. It contains the names of terrorists who have been deemed so dangerous to the United States, her citizens and interests, that they have been condemned to death without any attempt at arrest, trial or any due process. It is called the kill list. Every Tuesday morning in the Oval Office, the kill list is considered for possible amendment by the President and six men; never more, never less. Among them are the Director of the CIA and the four-star general commanding the world’s biggest and most dangerous private army. This is J-SOC, which is supposed not to exist. On a cold morning one early spring, a new name was added to the kill list. He was so elusive that even his true name was not known, and the huge machine of American counterterrorism had no picture of his face. Like Anwar al-Awlaki, the American/Yemini fanatic who preached hate sermons on the Internet, who had once been on the kill list and who was wiped out by a drone-launched missile in North Yemen in 2011, the new addition also preached online. So powerful were his sermons that young Muslims in the diaspora were converting to ultra-radical Islam and committing murders in its name. Like Awlaki, the new addition also delivered in perfect English. Without a name, he was known simply as the Preacher. The assignment was given to J-SOC whose CO passed it down to TOSA, a body so obscure that ninety-eight percent of serving U.S. officers have never heard of it. In fact, TOSA is the very small department, based in North Virginia, tasked with hunting down those terrorists who seek to hide themselves from American retributive justice. That afternoon, the director of TOSA, known in all official communications as Gray Fox, walked into the office of his senior manhunter and laid a sheet upon his desk. It simply bore the words “The Preacher. Identify, Locate, Destroy.” Under this was the signature of the commander in chief, the President. That made the paper a Presidential Executive Order, an EXORD. The man who stared at the order was an enigmatic lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps of forty-four who also, inside and outside the building, was known only by a code. He was called the Tracker. . . .
