There are more than 700 entries, and over 1600 variant forms and labels. Each entry tells a separate and complete little story with a setting, characters and plot. The stories themselves are wonderful fun and full of a gay, good humor. They will appeal to the widest age group. But it is the unique cast of animal characters which gives the book its most delightful difference. Where else can one meet such personable individuals as Brambles Warthog, Dingo Dog and the four Fishheads, among many others! The same characters appear and reappear throughout, which adds unity, interest and suspense. The young reader will keep turning the pages to see what daring stunt that infamous pilot Baron von Crow will try next. The aim is enjoyment. But Richard Scarry’s Storybook Dictionary has a big plus — it is bound to increase any child’s reading skills, and in a way which is always easy, natural, and so full of zest that learning becomes fun. The fledgling reader, for instance, will learn alphabetical sequence, letter and word recognition. Most important, he will become increasingly aware of the clear connection between picture and caption, action word and illustrated act. (After a few “read-tos” with an adult, he may even decide to try “reading” to himself.) The child who is already reading will be given helpful practice in spelling, sentence construction, variant word forms and vocabulary. He will not be given rules. Rather, he will be shown by examples in contexts which completely catch his interest and hold his attention. The fact that it is fun makes the learning that much more memorable. Still another important plus is the careful choice of entry words. The selection purposely goes beyond the usual auto-to-zoo nouns. It includes abstract, time, and concept words such as “almost,” “yesterday,” and “quite,” the words that are most often confused by young children. These trouble-spot words are used in ways which are always clear-cut, completely understandable and simple. This book was designed primarily for children, but it will adapt itself readily to adult language programs. It was planned, too, with the thought that parents, teachers, and librarians will be reading it over and over, and that it therefore must be enjoyable to them as well. Our hope is that any reader who romps through these pages will learn a lot, as well as have a wonderfully good time. And that he will return many, many times—for the fun of it, as well as to look up a word.
