ELIZABETH BEAR
THE GOVERNESS

The governess inhabits a liminal space. She is not a servant, exactly … but nor is she a member of the family. Though she is impoverished, she is also genteel. Though she is the family’s employee, she is also its protector.
Her name is Annabelle, but at the manor house known as The Silver Beeches, the family B____—father, mother with her faint, lingering hint of an Irish accent, two girls, and a boy—call her Mrs Reed. She is widowed. She has no children of her own.
Mr B____ does nothing so pedestrian as to work, nothing so frightfully middle-class as to hold down a job. His family’s maintenance is secured through a complex of investments, estates, trusts, and inheritances so Byzantine that Annabelle does not pretend to comprehend it. It would not seem out of place in the novels of one Mr Dickens, which Annabelle reads in her room beside the nursery after supper, when the children are asleep. Candles are dear, and her room has no gas, so she reads sparingly—except when she is caught up in some twist of the plot and lingers awake far too long into the night.
