I was dead.
That before all: I was dead and buried. Time passed and I took no notice of it. My body rotted. The vermin of the earth came and feasted upon my flesh.
It was then that my third eye opened. An area in the centre of my wallet-brown skull seemed to melt, and my questioning vision stared upwards, seeing through the coffin, through the soil, through the roots of the grass above, seeing as clearly as ever I had when I was alive.
I knew my mind’s eye was blue, though I could not say how I knew. Perhaps it was some sort of sympathetic magic, for I was staring at a clear blue sky that curved above me, flawless as the finest example of the ceramist’s art. And though I well knew where I lay, I felt that I was at long last home.
