Usami sucked sweetened red wheat paste from the tube as she watched newcomers stream through the Capitola’s arrival lanes. She kept her distance. Weeks cramped on board a passenger ship, where water had to be saved for drinking, gave travelers what the locals called the “new settler” smell. Best to let them air out a bit. The new settlers would focus on arranging quarters and making sure their funds transferred to the accounts here aboard the ancient generation ship the original settlers had cannibalized to create a makeshift home.
