Правда, первым крупным опубликованным произведением стал нефантастический роман для детей «Japan: a Cat's Eye View» («Япония на кошачий взгляд»), вышедший на английском. Большинство рассказов писателя объединены в сборники «Солнечный удар» (1982), «Медленные птицы» (1985), «Слезинки Сталина» (1991) и другие. Были среди его новелл настоящие удачи – например, «Очень медленная машина времени» и «Медленные птицы», номинированные на «Хьюго» и «Небьюлу». Однако славу писателю принесли не они, а романы. Свой собственный путь он обозначил в первом же романе «Внедрение», который немедленно вывел автора в соискатели премии имени Джона Кэмпбелла. Спустя два года французский перевод романа завоевал на родине Жюля Верна высшую награду – приз Apollo. «Внедрение» – это глубокая, многоплановая и притом отлично «организованная» книга о языке. Его силе и ограниченности, неизбежной при попытках адекватно описать всё богатство окружающего мира, о его уникальной миссии – служить мостом общения, и о гипотетических возможностях языка творить реальность, а не только её описывать. В следующем романе, «The Jonah Kit» («Набор для Ионы»; 1975), автор снова озабочен философской проблемой общения. Только на сей раз это контакт с китами, в мозг которых имплантированы образцы человеческих мыслей. Причём подопытные киты знакомятся с представлениями о мироздании не рядового человека, а ученого-астронома, только что сделавшего важное открытие. Особняком стоит в творчестве Уотсона роман, написанный в соавторстве с женой и впервые вышедший во Франции в 1976 году. Некоторое время писатель даже не мог найти издателя для книги – всех отпугивало название: «Машина оргазма». Между тем, проблема, как оказалось, была только в названии (на английском роман вышел в 1982 году под названием «Фабрика женщин»), потому что это вполне умеренная сатира на эксплуатацию женщин в современном обществе. Постепенно Уотсона всё более захватывали философские абстракции, мифологические и культурологические идеи и символы – весь этот круговорот «умирания-рождения», информации-энтропии, объективного-субъективного – и куда меньше заботили такие элементы, как сюжет, образы героев или социальная привязка. Хотя нужно отдать должное писателю: его книги становятся всё менее понятными, но читать их по-прежнему здорово! В романе «The Gardens of Delight» («Сады наслаждений»; 1980) автор материализует сюрреалистические фантазии великого Босха (они стали реальностью на далёкой планете, некогда заселённой колонистами с Земли). Всё изысканно, богато, продуманно и… дальше этой «материализации духов» автор не пошёл – то ли не знал, что со всем этим делать, то ли игра в конструирование нового мира прискучила самому конструктору. Ещё больших холодком веет от «Deathhunter» («Охотник за смертью»; 1981) – социальной утопии, в которой мир и гармония достигаются за счёт внутреннего примирения каждого члена общества с неизбежностью смерти. В 1984-1985 годах вышла трилогия Уотсона «Чёрный поток», вызвавшая, пожалуй, наибольшие споры. Сага Уотсона начинается как фантастика социальная. Автор противопоставляет два общества, разделённые непреодолимой границей-Рекой: патриархальное и феминистское. Однако уже ко второму тому действие раскручивается в конфликт поистине вселенский, читатель вместе с героиней оказывается ввергнут в космическое столкновение каких-то непостижимых высших сил, называющих себя Червем и Богомыслью. Героине предстоит пройти через цепь приключений, пережить мифологические «смерть-рождение», прежде чем она осознает своё место в этом мире и свою ответственность перед соплеменниками. Ещё одно достойное внимания произведение, «Chekhov's Journey» («Путешествие Чехова») – фантастический роман об авторе «Чайки» и «Вишнёвого сада». Некая советская кинокомпания предлагает герою совершить мысленное путешествие в прошлое на «психомашине времени», чтобы встретиться с реальным Чеховым. Однако появление её в России 1908 года вызывает природный катаклизм в небе над сибирской рекой Подкаменная Тунгуска. И что интересно – реального Антона Павловича известие о взрыве так заинтересовало, что он отложил на время недописанное и всецело отдался изучению загадочного феномена… Закончивший Оксфорд Уотсон развесистой клюквы избегал и к нашим историческим реалиям отнесся предельно корректно. И вообще, для него, как всегда, сюжет – не главное. Главное – мысль. А поразмышлять по прочтении книги будет над чем: тут и философия истории, и проблема «исторической объективности», и проблема вмешательства в ход истории…

From time immemorial no boat had crossed the river on account of the black current. Yet of course that did not stop us from plying our trade up and down the eastern shoreline all the way from Ajelobo in the south down to Umdala in the north where the river fattens out vastly, becoming salt not fresh, and storm-tossed. And it had always been my ambition as a little girl in dusty Pecawar— almost midway along the axis of our navigation—to join the boating guild and be a riverwoman. And why not? reasoned my parents. At least that’s the brave face they put on my decision (or so I thought at the time). I wouldn’t remain on the river forever, but would be bound to find myself a man sooner or later somewhere along those seven hundred leagues of shore between north and south and bring him home to Pecawar to settle him there to raise our family, and probably settle with him —just as other girls took passage in the spring and returned in the autumn with a newly claimed husband. In my case it might simply take a little longer, but surely I would tire of wanderlust. The river, though richly varied from the southern jungles to the cold northern marshes, is hardly infinite. So after five or six years of sailing up and down it I ought to be all too familiar with change for its own sake. My twin brother, Capsi, as though perversely determined to play west to my north and south, had set his heart on joining the tiny monkish fraternity of observers down in the town of Verrino fifty leagues to the north; about whom we knew little enough in Pecawar, apart from the mere fact of their existence—but this was enough for Capsi. From an early age he had peered through a succession of home-made spyglasses over the league-and-a-half of river—beyond the black current that streams midway—at the western shore, even though this is quite blank and barren opposite Pecawar. . . .

CHRIS SOLE DRESSED quickly. Eileen had already called him once. The second time she called him, the postman had been to the door. “There's a letter from Brazil,” she shouted from the foot of the stairs. “It's from Pierre—” Pierre? What was he writing for? The news bothered him. Eileen had been so distant and detached since their boy was born — involved in herself and Peter and memories. It wasn't a detachment he found it particularly easy to break through any more — or, to be frank, that he cared to. So what effect would this letter from her one-time lover have on her? He hoped it wouldn't be too troublesome. The landing window gave a quick hint of black fields, other staff houses, the Hospital half a mile away on top of the hill. He glanced momentarily — and shivered with morning misgivings. They often attacked him between waking up and getting to the Hospital. . . .
