THE NIGHT-MIRRORS
PAT CADIGAN
The Grandmas were so busy talking over one another about what was on TV, they didn’t notice Flo peeking through the drapes at the night-mirror behind the sofa.
Of all the discoveries she’d made (not that many, but she was only five), Flo’s absolute favorite was how nighttime turned windows into mirrors. Everyone else seemed to think this was as ordinary as breakfast. But then, most people took regular mirrors for granted, too, as if they weren’t sort-of windows.
“Florence!” Grandma 1 said suddenly, and Flo sagged against the couch cushion. She’d stopped thinking about the Grandmas not noticing her. Every time she did that, at least one of them would wonder what she was up to. “What have we told you about fidgeting with the drapes?”
