Всё творчество Рафаэля можно условно разделить на три группы: романы о путешествии Ясона и аргонавтов, облачённом в НФ-сеттинг, и составляющие цикл «Devil is Dead», книги, фокусирующиеся на отдалённом будущем человечества («Past Master», «Space Chantey», «The Annals of Klepsis» и ряд других), и истории, вращающиеся вокруг персонажей исследовательского «Institute For Impure Science». Как правило, произведения Лафферти представляют собой рекомбинации элементов католической мифологии, традиционной НФ, фэнтези и абсурда, причём сюжет зачастую играет второстепенную роль, а на первый план выходят отточенный стиль автора, символизм и семантические игры, что имеет свойство отпугивать основную массу потенциальных читателей, но привлекает внимание критиков. По словам Майкла Суэнвика, «если бы Лафферти не было, то... то нам всё равно не хватило бы воображения его придумать». Из некролога, написанного Нилом Гейманом: «без сомнения, Рафаэль Лафферти был превосходным писателем своего собственного жанра. Он был гением, эксцентриком, безумцем. Only Ceran kept his own — to the disgust of his commander, Manbreaker. “Nobody can be a hero with a name like Ceran Swicegood!” Manbreaker would thunder. “Why don't you take Storm Shannon? That's good. Or Gutboy Barrelhouse or Slash Slagle or Nevel Knife? You barely glanced at the suggested list.” “I'll keep my own,” Ceran always said, and that is where he made his mistake. A new name will sometimes bring out a new personality. It had done so for George Blood. Though the hair on George's chest was a graft job, yet that and his new name had turned him from a boy into a man. Had Ceran assumed the heroic name of Gutboy Barrelhouse he might have been capable of rousing endeavors and man-sized angers rather than his tittering indecisions and flouncy figures. They were down on the big asteroid Proavitus — a sphere that almost tinkled with the potential profit that might be shaken out of it. And the tough men of the Expedition knew their business. They signed big contracts on the native velvet-like bark scrolls and on their own parallel tapes. They impressed, inveigled and somewhat cowed the slight people of Proavitus. Here was a solid two-way market, enough to make them slaver. And there was a whole world of oddities that could lend themselves to the luxury trade. . . . She nominated Austro to take her place. Ivan Kalisky had also turned thirteen and would have to get out of it. He nominated his little, fat, freckled, glasses-wearing sister Susie Kalisky to take his place. Susie Kalisky looked a lot like the Susie Kalusy in the Rocky McCrocky comic strip. There was another vacancy in the gang. One small boy who shall be nameless had been expelled when it was discovered that he was as yellow as a daffodil. Austro, as soon as he was confirmed as a member, nominated his dog for this other vacant place. “People will laugh at us if we have a dog for a member,” Dennis Oldstone said. “People won't laugh a whole lot at a dog that can swallow them in one swallow,” Austro argued. “And there is a certain prestige in having the biggest dog in the world as a member,” Lowell Ragswell supported Austro. So they accepted the dog into their club. And they had gotten their membership in shape just in time. There was another group of young people around; these were pure-hearted and aesthetic, and they had psychokinetic powers that reflected their pure-heartedness. They danced willow dances and they wore sweet-gum leaves in their hair. And it had been announced that they would give a public demonstration of their powers.
