Описание: Карл Эдвард Вагнер (Karl Edward Wagner, 12 декабря 1945 г. - 13 октября 1994 г.) - американский писатель, создававший произведения в жанрах хоррор и героического фэнтези, а также редактор и составитель серии антологий. Самый известный цикл произведений автора — «Кейн», состоящий из нескольких романов и множества рассказов. Первая публикация — роман «Паутина тьмы» («Darkness Weaves with Many Shades») (1970; исправленное и дополненное издание 1978 года — под названием «Darkness Weaves»). С этой книгой связана поучительная ситуация. В издательстве сильно отредактировали и ужали роман, чтобы уместиться в 30 тысяч слов. Не желая останавливаться на достигнутом, они ещё и решили, что герой должен соответствовать изображению на обложке (как говорил Вагнер, нарисованный там тип напоминал Кассиуса Клея, натянувшего красные плавки). Но издательские редакторы не очень тщательно поработали с текстом, поэтому герой там периодически меняет облик, становясь то светлокожим, то очень смуглым, превращаясь то в рыжеволосого, то в брюнета и т. п. Единственное, за что хвалят то издание, это прекрасная карта описываемого мира, которая красовалась на обратной стороне книги. Позднее роман был переиздан в авторской редакции... Кроме того, Вагнер планировал ещё четыре (а возможно, даже шесть) книги о Кейне. Все эти проекты остались незавершёнными, но от некоторых из них сохранились отдельные главы и черновики. Вагнер создал романы о приключениях двоих героев Роберта Ирвина Говарда: вождя пиктов Брана Мак Морна — «Легион теней» («Legion from the Shadows») (1976), — и Конана-киммерийца — «Дорога королей» («The Road of Kings») (1979). Под редакцией Вагнера выходили рассказы и повести Роберта Говарда. Был привлечён в качестве сценариста к созданию третьего фильма о Конане-варваре (продолжение «Конана-варвара», 1982, и «Конана-разрушителя», 1984), но картина так и не была снята. В 1983 г. повесть Вагнера «Сверх всякой меры» («Beyond Any Measure») (1982) награждена Всемирной премией фэнтези. Цикл о Кейне номинировался на «Balrog»-1981. Рассказ «Палки» (1974) был награждён «British Fantasy Award»-1975, рассказ «Закат двух солнц» («Two Suns Settings») (1976) получил «British Fantasy Award»-1977, рассказ «Neither Brute Nor Human» (1983) — «British Fantasy Award»-1984. Сборник «Exorcisms and Ecstasies» (1997) был награждён «Bram Stoker Award»-1998.

The sun that morning had shone sullen red through the mists that swirled above the ridges and moors. Now the sun that sank beneath the Highlands’ jagged rim burned a deeper red—as red as the blood that clotted across the trampled heath below. In the lengthening shadow fifteen thousand lay slain—skin-clad savage and armored legionary, Pict and Roman—their hacked and skewered bodies strewn wherever they fell. Leaning on the shoulders of his chieftains, Othna Mak Morn, war chief of the Pictish clans, looked upon the field of carnage through dying eyes that blazed bright with triumph. An entire legion had died here today—a victory purchased life for life with Pictish blood. Rome had suffered its most crushing defeat on British soil, and Othna Mak Morn would not walk alone on the road to hell. To protect Rome’s new province from the unsubdued tribes of the North, Emperor Hadrian had ordered the construction of a great wall across the breadth of Britain. Some eighty Roman miles it stretched, the Wall of Hadrian, across the Solway-Tyne isthmus—cutting the island in two with unconquered Caledonia to the north and the partially philoRoman tribes to the south. For years the legions had labored over ditches and earthworks, raising a wall of stone and turf some eight to ten feet thick and some fifteen feet in height, with fortlets for its garrisons at each mile along its length. . . .
PART ONE
Prologue
"He's evil incarnate! Stay away from him!" Arbas glared at the young outlander across from him and took a deep drink from the mug of ale the stranger had bought him. At present he felt only contempt for the free-spending youth who had sought him out here in the Tavern of Selram Honest. Arbas—called by many, Arbas the Assassin—was in a foul mood. A sudden and ill-timed (suspiciously ill-timed, it seemed to Arbas) run of bad luck with the dice earlier this evening had stripped from him a comfortable pile of winnings and all his ready coin as well. The adoring tavern maid, who had been slipping teasing fingers over the lean muscles beneath his leather vest, then turned coldly aloof and left him with a scornful air. Perhaps it was a disappointed air, Arbas mused sourly. Then had come this stranger, whose upper-class manner was in dubious contrast to the rough dress he displayed. The stranger had simply introduced himself as Imel and volunteered no further information other than cautiously chosen gossip. Seemingly he was an altruist solely devoted to keeping Arbas's mug filled to the brim with strong ale. Unconvinced, Arbas decided to let the fool throw away his money. He was not a man who got drunk easily. Eventually Arbas knew that the other would in some very offhand, so very casual manner, begin to talk about some rival, some black hearted son of a bitch—someone for whose demise Imel would pay. Arbas had been professionally estimating exactly how much Imel might be able to pay when the stranger had abruptly demolished all the assassin's calculations. Somehow the conversation had shifted to the one man whose death the Combine authorities so fervently prayed for. With a gait Arbas realized that the outlander was seeking information about Kane. . . .
