Eschael spun his gleaming blue sword around in both hands, and brought the sharp edge down upon the skull of a creature that grasped his bare ankle with green-black claws.
“Back into the pit, foul creature!” Eschael shouted, as the slime-covered beast, its head cloven in two, slid down the jagged precipice over the heads of its fellows back into the shadows. Its black blood spattered the hem of his white samite robe, burning holes that healed the next moment as though the garment was a living thing. Eschael reached inside himself for the divine strength to slay the next monster, and the next. The dark enemy seemed to be endless. No sooner had he killed one than another rose over its crushed and bleeding corpse to challenge him. Greasy-feathered harpies tore at his long black hair. Sulphur-scaled winged serpents wound around his limbs, but he slew them all.
Host after host of the heavenly defenders fell as well, gleaming angels torn apart by demons, blessed souls vanquished by deformed monsters reeking of corrupt flesh. Soaring above them, in contrast to the hideousness of his army, rose Lucifer, once beloved of the Most High, as beautiful then as the moment he had been cast forth from Heaven, save that his eyes were cold and joyless.
